Henry at the Grand Arcade

In March 2005 Henry had his photograph taken in Sidney Street, Cambridge, by “a photographer who thought I had an interesting face”.

This turned out to be one of a series of photographs of Cambridge people taken by Martin Parr of Magnum Photos. The photographs were taken for display on the hoardings surrounding Cambridge’s Grand Arcade shopping centre during its development.

My husband and I [Henry’s daughter Andrea] were out with Henry one day in some beech woods near Cambridge collecting leaf litter for one of Henry’s model fungus displays. A complete stranger walking a dog came up to him and said “You’re the man from the photograph!”. Henry got that a lot.

In January 2006 Christopher South, News Editor at the Cambridge Evening News, wrote an article about Henry on the hoardings. The illustration, a photograph by Matthew Power, showed Henry standing in front of Henry!

The photograph that appeared on the hoardings is iconic – a perfect representation of Henry and the way many people would remember him. Martin Parr kindly gave us permission to use it as the header image for this website.
